During this past summer, a group of Grade 10s and 11s and teachers travelled to Cambodia to participate in Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village program. Habitat for Humanity is a global non-profit organization whose vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. As part of the Global Village program, our students helped a family in need rebuild their home.
Sister Agatha Ahern passed away on June 27, 2018, in Ireland. During her many years of service, she contributed greatly to the overall success of Saint Maur International School, and was a well respected and admired member of the teaching staff and Sisters of the Infant Jesus. The following eulogy for Sister Agatha was shared with the community at her memorial service on June 29.
On Friday 18 May, Saint Maur's glitterati gathered at Iseyama Hills's Grand Venezia ballroom, in Yokohama, for the annual Junior and Senior Prom.
Thanks to an ongoing effort to communicate about its many activities, the Science Department has been generating more and more interest from fellow scientists in Japan and abroad. We were recently contacted by Dr Tucker Gilman, a biologist at the University of Manchester, who kindly offered us to present his work to our students. Dr Gilman and one of his graduate students, Ms Rebecca Lewis, came to our school on Friday 18th of May and gave our Grade 11 IB Biologists a 1-hour presentation of their work through a lecture and an exciting activity.
Monday April 23rd was sure to become an exciting day for twenty-two Montessori and Elementary School students who performed in the 3rd Ballet Club Mini-Spring Recital in the Auditorium. During lunch, the Montessori classroom was transformed to a hair salon where the little ballet performers had their chignon hairstyle done. Just before Period 6 ended, the Elementary School students headed to the Auditorium Dressing Room and joined the Montessori’s transformation to graceful and stylish ballet dancers.
The IB Biology students having completed their Individual Investigations, they are now proficient in a number of laboratory techniques, which they had to master in order to complete their projects. In a spirit of sharing, they have agreed to dedicate some of their precious time to demonstrate those newly acquired skills in front of the camera, in order to help subsequent generations of students.
Born on May 2, 1901, Genesis World Records has validated that she is the oldest living person in the world at the age of 116, just a few days short of 117.
April 14th was the annual RoboSumo Challenge competition at Saint Maur International School. This event is available to middle and elementary students across the Kanto area and offers an opportunity for students to collaborate and share their passion for robotics.
The 48th World Irish Dancing Championships took place on March 24th - April 1st, 2018 at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow, United Kingdom. The event was organised by An Aoimisiúm le Rincí Gaelacha with more than 5,000 competitors. This event is considered the “Olympics” of Irish Dance, one of the prestigious events with elite dancers from all over the world competing to become the “Champions of the World”.
In October of last year (2017) the Science Department was in panic! The water still for preparing distilled water had broken down irretrievably. In constant use since the original purchase in 2004 it chose the moment before the IB Biology Individual Investigations to stop working.
On Monday 19th of March, a group of 21 IB Biology students from Saint Maur International School, led by Ms Novick and Dr Erard visited the Yokohama Campus of RIKEN (Rikagaku Kenkyūsho, 理化学研究所), a multidisciplinary research organization that is engaged in a broad variety of research within natural sciences.
The Seventh Annual O’Keeffe Irish Dance Celebration took place on Thursday, March 15th, in the Saint Maur Fine Arts Auditorium with more than 30 students from Gr. 1 – Gr. 12 performing. Parents, teachers and friends joined this celebration which began with the High School students performing the Irish Dance with hard shoes. This dance is similar to tap dancing and our students staged an outstanding presentation. Following came our youngest dancers from Grade 1 through Grade 4. Our Middle School students danced both with soft and hard shoes demonstrating their ability to perform the Irish stepdance in a variety of rhythms.
