Grade 10 Historical Walking Tour of Yokohama
On Friday 27th September, 38 Grade 10 enthusiastic students and four excited teachers stepped out onto the rainy streets surrounding the school for a historical walking tour of Yokohama led by Mr. Glenn Scoggins, retired Saint Maur history teacher and author of Steadfast: a portrait of our school's long history.
After a short introduction to our day by Mr. Scoggins and some reminders on how to navigate the rainy conditions, the students were taken to several sights around the Yamate area including the founding steps of St. Joseph's College and Yokohama's Foreign General Cemetery. Students were given insights into what life was like for the first group of foreign settlers on the Bluff and the challenges faced by Saint Maur's founding sisters, including navigating a world war and a devastating earthquake.
From there, students were led through Yamashita Park, the Yokohama Archives of History and the Museum of Yokohama Urban History where Mr. Scoggins gave the students perceptive commentary on life in Yokohama as well as comprehensive information on the events, people and places which have since shaped Yokohama into the amazing unique place it is today.
A huge thank you to Mr. Scoggins for being our tour guide for the third year in a row!
