High School Art & Drama London Trip - A Week of Culture and Creativity

In June, 33 of our talented Grade 9 to 12 High School students embarked on an unforgettable cultural journey to London, immersing themselves in the world of art, drama, and history. For one week, the students, specializing in either Art or Drama, explored the vibrant heart of the city while participating in a range of exciting and educational activities.

A Detour and Arrival

The students’ adventure began with a slight detour through Helsinki before arriving in London, where they stayed at a comfortable hotel in Wembley, giving them easy access to the city’s most iconic landmarks and experiences. From the moment they arrived, the week was filled with awe-inspiring visits to famous locations and enriching workshops that would leave a lasting impression.

Iconic Landmarks and Cultural Highlights

The students had the chance to see some of London’s most famous landmarks, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and Leicester Square. These historic sites gave them a deep appreciation of London’s rich heritage. For many, the thrill of seeing these places in person brought classroom lessons to life.

A Week of Theatre Magic

The Drama students were particularly excited to experience the magic of London's world-renowned theatre scene. The group attended show-stopping performances of Hamilton and Matilda, both beloved musicals known for their powerful storytelling and unforgettable music. They also witnessed London Tide, a captivating literary adaptation, and saw The Taming of the Shrew at none other than the Globe Theatre, offering them a unique insight into Shakespearean drama in the very venue where it was first performed.

Artistic Inspiration

Meanwhile, the Art students explored some of London’s most famous galleries and museums, soaking in artistic masterpieces from various movements and periods. Their visits to the Tate Modern, Design Museum, National Gallery, and Barbican provided a rich tapestry of inspiration, from contemporary art installations to classical masterpieces.

Hands-On Workshops

In addition to their sightseeing adventures, students from both disciplines had the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops. Drama students were treated to a rap and dance workshop led by a former star of Hamilton, which gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the performance techniques used in the acclaimed musical. Art students, on the other hand, took part in a graffiti workshop, allowing them to channel their creativity in a modern and dynamic art form.

Market Experiences and Culinary Delights

Of course, no trip to London would be complete without indulging in the city’s eclectic food scene. Students sampled delicious street food and unique culinary experiences at Camden Market and Borough Market, two of London’s most famous marketplaces. The markets also offered students a chance to explore the local culture further, with opportunities to shop for souvenirs and immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere.

A Memorable Experience

By the end of the week, both Art and Drama students had experienced an enriching blend of cultural exploration, artistic discovery, and unforgettable memories. Their exposure to world-class theatre, museums, and hands-on creative workshops provided invaluable learning opportunities that went beyond the classroom.

This trip has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on everyone involved, and we are proud of our students for embracing the opportunity to broaden their horizons. It was truly a cultural experience they will carry with them for years to come, filled with both educational growth and personal inspiration.
