Last week 108 students, of all ages, from Grade 1-12, took part in Trinity Music examinations. These academic qualifications are an internationally recognised measurement of ability on an instrument and are assessed by the prestigious London conservatoire, Trinity College.
On May 11th, the Combined 7th & 8th Grade Band performed at the KPASS Middle School Band Festival, which was held for the first time since 2019. This was the first time for these students to perform at this event, held at Yokosuka Naval Base and featuring performances by schools from the Tokyo and Yokohama area. “It was nice to listen to the band music that students in other schools prepared for the KPASS Band Festival,” said one grade 8 student.
These past weeks have been inspiring for our ambitious music students at Saint Maur International School.
Each year, Saint Maur High School students participate in art exhibitions across different venues in Tokyo and Yokohama. Taking part in art lessons as part of their curriculum, as well as within Clubs after school, provides students with a great opportunity to become Balanced Learners and Unique Individuals - two of our Saint Maur Essential Outcomes.
On 8 February, the Saint Maur Honor Jazz Combo, a decet featuring many of Saint Maur’s finest young musicians, performed at the KPASS Jazz Festival hosted by the Christian Academy in Japan. The festival included big bands, vocal ensembles, and jazz combos from international schools in Tokyo and Kanagawa. “I really enjoyed seeing all the other schools’ jazz bands,” said our participating saxophonist in Grade 11. “I got an idea of where we were are in relation to the other bands.”
On Friday, May 13th, we opened our doors to the Saint Maur parent community for our very first in-person Elementary concert in 3 years! The different performances featured music learnt in Music class throughout the academic year.
As we approach the end of the academic year, the Music department felt it would be a great time to report on some of the fantastic live events that our students have recently performed in!
A big thank you to our Parent Support Group (PSG) at Saint Maur for their financial support with a new music workshop series that allowed top musicians to perform a concert and lecture live on stage for our students.

Our art exhibition at the stunning, historic Berrick Hall is on display now! The exhibition elegantly combines the features of 1930's European architecture with our students artworks showcasing a range of painting techniques and 3D projects.
Saint Maur International School placed FIRST in the annual Kanto Plains Association of Secondary Schools (KPASS) Speech Contest!
One of the highest honors a Saint Maur musician can receive is to be selected for one of the KPASS Honor ensembles. Eight students proudly represented Saint Maur in the 2020-2021 Honor Band and Honor Choir.
