Last November 4th, 2017, our Grade 6 students, Rin and Lea competed in the Mainland European and Asian Irish Dancing Championships 2017 in Gdynia, Poland. This event hosted the best dancers from Europe and Asia and we are proud that two of our students represented Japan. Rin placed 4th in the Under 11 Girls group and Lea, 8th in the Under 12 Girls group.
Apprehensions were almost as unusually high as the 29-degree temperatures of the sparkling October day on the Saint Maur team, as the day of the annual Brain Bowl competition dawned.
The father of two of our distinguished past students will be awarded a very prestigious award by the Irish President on the 30th November. Mr. Hideki Mimura, the father of Melissa (RIP) and Eleanor has received this award for promoting Ireland here in Japan.
Saint Maur International School welcomed six students from Yokohama Science Frontier high School (YSFH) to take part in the practical phase of the IB Group 4 (Science/IT) project, held at the Saint Maur Science Centre on 20th October 2017. Grade 12 students formed inter-disciplinary Science groups and investigated a topic of their choice on the theme of ‘uncertainty’. Students designed the experimental protocol themselves, set up the apparatus, recorded data and wrote up a short report on their findings. International mindedness is a key component of all IB Group 4 subjects.
The IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations for the tenth graders are held in two sessions every year: October/November and May/June. Each subject is separately graded with each student taking exams in several different subjects. The IGCSE results for the sophomores of 2016/17 were issued at the end of August.
During this past summer, a group of Grade 11 students and teachers travelled to Cambodia to participate in Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village program. Habitat for Humanity is a global non-profit organization whose vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. As part of the Global Village program, our students helped a family in need rebuild their home.
On Friday, June 2nd, the Saint Maur Community celebrated the annual graduation mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral. This celebration marked the end of 144 years and the beginning of our 145th year as the oldest international school in Japan and the third oldest in the world, as well as being the only Catholic international school in the Diocese of Yokohama, and the only co-educational Catholic international school in the Kanto Plains region.
The Science Department is proud to announce the name of the Scientist of the Year for the academic year 2016 - 2017. This year's recipient is Ayumu Nishimura an extremely motivated and talented student who demonstrated through weeks of hard work that she had what it takes to make a successful researcher.
The middle school science investigations came to a close on Friday, May 12 at the Middle School Science Fair where fifteen groups in Grade 7 and nine groups in Grade 6 presented their scientific findings to the school community.
On Saturday May 6th, Saint Maur Middle School students entered the Yokota Robot Rumble with 32 different teams entered from across four different schools. Held at Yokota Air Base, the Robot Rumble is a combination of three events, which test programming, driver control and team-work.
Japan is well known for being one of the cleanest countries in the world. Japanese people seem to have a special pride in keeping the areas around their houses and most public places clean and tidy. However there is a big exception - if you visit a beach or mountain side where many people gather, you can often find lots of trash scattered around. This could be due to the lack of garbage bins in many public places or possibly because Japanese people think someone else will clean these places up for them. The result however is often an unsightly mess in some of Japan’s most beautiful places.
Five Saint Maur International School scientists attended the Yokohama Science Frontier Forum for International Research in Science and Technology, where they presented the findings collected during their Individual Investigations.
